Plantar Fasciitis

This is a common problem caused when the most powerful ligament in the foot becomes torn at its point of attachment to the front of the heel bone (due to a strain injury). Such a condition can vary from case to case but commonly causes severe pain under the heel particularly for the first 15 minutes of the day after just getting out of bed. Anatomically ligamentous tissue has a very poor blood supply and so this condition can take weeks or even months to heal. Our individual lifestyle, occupation and physical make up can make a significant difference to the rate of healing. Thus, a middle aged person who is overweight, carrying heavy boxes in a warehouse all day will more than likely take longer to recover than a slim young person who works behind a desk.

Treatment

Treatment plans ensure that the patient is made aware that their footwear is vitally important to the management of the condition. Laced up, supportive shoes are much better than flip flops, sandals, canvas pumps etc. Advice about attempts to lose weight can prove helpful as can the way the sufferer manages their lifestyle. Padding and strapping techniques in the short term can be employed to alleviate symptoms and orthotics / insoles can be prescribed. In acute cases patients can be referred for a steroid injection (which can be performed in house at the surgery).
